How to Fix a Toilet

Is there anything more terrifying than a toilet about to overflow? A creaking, burbling, malfunctioning monster of a commode is the fear of any homeowner. Fortunately, most common toilet problems can be easily and quickly fixed by diagnosing the correct problem and making a few simple adjustments.

Shut the water off. If your toilet has become clogged, don't try to flush it or you'll risk overflowing the toilet. Find the water valve on the wall that connects the waterline to the toilet and turn it clockwise until it stops. Water should stop coming into the tank.

Get a plunger. It's called the plumber's helper for a reason. Some plungers have complicated bulb shapes and some are simple suction cups, but you just need to make sure your plunger is big enough to cover the opening at the bottom of the bowl. Make sure there's enough water in the bowl to cover the cup of the plunger. It's easier to have some water to force the clog out with, but now that you've shut off the water you can't flush anymore in from the tank. Get a few cups of water from the sink to add to the bowl if you need to.

Use a plumber's auger or a "snake." If the clog is close to the top, the plunger should get it. If it has worked its way down the pipe, however, you might need the heavy artillery. A plumber's auger, also called a "snake," is essentially a long wire that you can reel out and guide through the pipe to forcefully dislodge the clog and then reel back up.

How to Maintain a Tankless Water Heater

Tankless water heaters should have regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly and increase their lifespan. At least once per year you should flush your tankless water heater with white vinegar and water. Annually flushing your tankless water heater will give it a much longer lifespan. To do this you will need a submersible water pump.

       Steps are as follows:

         Turn off the water heater.

Turn off the incoming and outgoing water valves by turning the handles  clockwise.

Fill a bucket or basin tub with a gallon of white vinegar.

Connect a short length of garden hose to the outgoing water valve.  Place  the tub of vinegar under the hose and valves.

Connect a garden hose to the incoming water valve. Connect the other  end of the hose to a water pump.

Place the submersible water pump into the tub of vinegar.

Open the outgoing/incoming water valves, and turn on the water pump.  The pump will begin to flush vinegar through the tank. Let the tank flush  for 15 to 30 minutes. After you've finished flushing vinegar through the  tank, flush some clean water through it for a few minutes to clean out all  of the vinegar.

How to Unfreeze Your Water Pipelines

For many homeowners living in a region that has cold winters, sometimes they will have to deal with frozen water pipes. There are number of methods to help you easily unfreeze your pipes. They are as follows:
  • A high power hair dryer is the most common and safest method of unfreezing frozen water pipes. You just have to move the hair dryer back and forth over the frozen section to thaw the pipe. The faucet should be open to allow the water to start dripping.
  • You can use an electric portable space heater to thaw your water pipes. A portable heater is effective if you can fit it in the space near the pipe since the amount of heat produced is not that powerful. However, it does take a while to thaw a frozen pipe.
  • There is a device called a 'piping hot' machine that uses two clamps that you attach to the frozen pipe. When the machine is in use it heats the pipe area between the two clamps. You can usually rent a 'piping hot' machine from a plumbing supplier.
  • Using a heat gun is an effective way to unfreeze the water pipes. You just have to aim the heat gun on the frozen section of the pipe and move it back and forth so that heat spreads over the frozen section.

Water Heater Temperature Control

On residential tanks, the settings are normally warm, hot, very hot or something similar. There is so much variation on what these settings mean, but the right temperature is at least 130 degrees at the tap, which you can test with a meat or candy thermometer.
It is important to keep the temperature close to 130 degrees. Even though you can be scalded at 130 degrees if you spend long enough under the water, you’ll probably draw back before that happens. If the temperature is below 120 degrees, Legionella bacteria can grow and you could catch Legionnaire’s disease by inhaling the mist when you take a shower. Temperatures above 130 degrees increase your scalding risk, encourage sediment buildup and waste energy.
When leaving for vacation, set the hot water heater temperature at its lowest setting. This will save money and reduce the risk of any problems while you are away. Also, if your faucets are sputtering, spitting and spewing, it could be a sign that your water heater is overheating.
